Working with Youth

Orain is a member of Jamaicans Safely Tackling Adolescent Reproductive Health through the International Youth Speak Out Project.

OrainI am a 19-year old student from Clarendon, attending West Indies University.  Before I became a member of the national youth leadership council, Jamaicans Safely Tackling Adolescent Reproductive Health (J-STAR), I was a debater for my high school for 5 years, winning various competitions and granted awards for best speaker and best debater. In 2007, I became captain of the team and led the team to the semi-finals of a national debate competition.  I also won awards in the The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) public speaking competition for my high school. In 2007 and 2008, I earned a position in the 5th and 6th national youth parliament, where I sat as Minister of Transport and Works and as Minster of National Security, respectively. During my years at Glenmuir High School, I became a part of the national secondary student’s council and helped to organize many marches against crime and violence against youth and in support of youth empowerment. I served on the advisory board for the Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network and the Clarendon Youth Network, in partnership with UNESCO and the National Secondary Students Council.  I was born the third of three children to a single mother who barely had the means to provide for the family.  Through my personal struggle and drive for social change, I am proud to be apart of J-STAR.
