Working with Youth

Aldo is a Texas State Youth Activist and a student at Austin College. Aldo also works with the Texas Freedom Network and the TeenAge Communication Theatre program of Planned Parenthood of North Texas.

AldoMy name is Aldo. I am from Dallas, Texas and am a volunteer and project assistant at TACT (Teen Age Communication Theatre) via Planned Parenthood of North Texas. At TACT we educate teens on sexuality, substance abuse, peer pressure, decision-making, and human rights through drama and facts. The program is by teens and for teens. We are constantly updating our skits to tailor them to the wide varieties of audiences we perform for across the Dallas Metroplex. As a second year member and project assistant, I will sometimes teach the issues our characters face during their skits. For me and the other nine project assistants, our job entails answering questions and providing comprehensive sex education. At TACT we have year round training in all the areas in which we educate. We have done workshops with Planned Parenthood of North Texas, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Suicide Hotline, Elisa Project, Dallas County Health Department and many more.

One huge advantage I have is having an understanding of two very different sex education approaches. At my high school I received a very brief abstinence-only sex education. Being at TACT I have received an extensive comprehensive sex education that has opened my eyes and mind to all different kinds of ideas. Being able to compare the two I am glad I understand the differences between the two approaches.

My educational background is primarily in the arts. Since the 4th grade I have gone to a performing arts magnet school and am now studying voice. I have studied classical, jazz, and musical theatre. The academic program my school is equally as rewarding and challenging as the arts classes I take. By my graduation in May I will of taken advanced placement courses in English, Literature, American History, Economics, Government, Spanish and Psychology. While at ARTS Magnet my passion has been the social sciences. Working with TACT and certain courses in my school have both contributed to my ultimate goal of pursuing a career in Psychology and Medicine in college. My background in the arts will help me in any career path I choose and take me anywhere I want to go. The many lessons learned at my school will stay with me forever.
