HIV vaccine is the best hope for slowing the spread of HIV. A preventive HIV vaccine is a substance that teaches the body's immune system to recognize and protect itself against HIV, the virus that causes AIDS Currently, there is no preventive HIV vaccine available. No vaccine has been proven to work effectively to prevent HIV among all populations, including adolescents and young adults. Given the high rates of HIV infection among young people ages 13 to 24 and the disproportionate rates of HIV infections among youth of color, it is important that African American and Latino youth ages 18 to 24 volunteer and support HIV vaccine research.
