A Lesson Plan from Life Planning Education: A Youth Development Program (Chapter Three) NOTE: Life Planning Education (LPE) is currently being revised. The printed/for-sale version includes an older version of this lesson plan. Please make sure you have looked at the PDF of Life Planning Education before purchasing - that is the version that is available to buy. Purpose: To permit youth to reflect upon what they have learned about communication skills
Materials: A copy for each participant of the handout, Reflective Questions
Time: 30 minutes
Procedure:
- Pass out copies of the Reflective Questions. Say that these questions will give them an opportunity to think about what they have learned. Assure them that this is not a test. You just want to see whether and how much the exercises helped youth to become better communicators.
- Give participants about 15 minutes to answer the questions. Collect the handouts and put them aside.
- Go over the discussion points below.
Discussion Points:
- What, if anything, did you enjoy about the communication skills activities?
- Did you gain some insight into situations where things haven’t gone as you wished or where someone misunderstood what you wanted? What would you do differently next time?
- Do you feel able to communicate assertively? If not, what would support you in communicating assertively?
