Reflecting on Communication Skills Print

A Lesson Plan from Life Planning Education: A Youth Development Program (Chapter Three)

NOTE:  Life Planning Education (LPE) is currently being revised. The printed/for-sale version includes an older version of this lesson plan. Please make sure you have looked at the PDF of Life Planning Education before purchasing - that is the version that is available to buy.

Purpose: To permit youth to reflect upon what they have learned about communication skills

Materials: A copy for each participant of the handout, Reflective Questions

Time: 30 minutes

Procedure:
  1. Pass out copies of the Reflective Questions.  Say that these questions will give them an opportunity to think about what they have learned. Assure them that this is not a test. You just want to see whether and how much the exercises helped youth to become better communicators.
  2. Give participants about 15 minutes to answer the questions.  Collect the handouts and put them aside.
  3. Go over the discussion points below.
Discussion Points:
  1. What, if anything, did you enjoy about the communication skills activities?
  2. Did you gain some insight into situations where things haven’t gone as you wished or where someone misunderstood what you wanted?  What would you do differently next time?
  3. Do you feel able to communicate assertively?  If not, what would support you in communicating assertively?
