There are many actions individuals can take towards achieving equality and acceptance for all types of young people regardless of gender, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Individuals can examine their own prejudices and affirm the value of different backgrounds and points of view. But in addition, governments and programs must make efforts to eliminate discrimination and disparities in our culture. Abstinence-only programs teach one set of values to all young people regardless of background; while comprehensive sex education includes instruction that is culturally competent and respectful of all young people. Take action to encourage government to fund culturally competent sexuality education.
Tell Congress to Eliminate Abstinence-Only Funding Since 1997, the United States government has invested over $1.5 billion in programs that mislead young people and promote scientifically-inaccurate information. While the majority of this funding ended in 2009, less than a year later, health care reform reinstated funding through 2014 for the Title V abstinence-only-until-marriage program. Numerous studies, including a long-term, scientific evaluation mandated by Congress confirmed that these programs are ineffective at helping young people abstain from sex. The facts are in and now Congress must act to stop throwing good money after bad! Tell Congress to eliminate all federal funding for failed abstinence-only-until-marriage programs!
Schools should be safe for all young people - and hate crimes must be fully investigated and prosecuted.
