Press Release: #4EACHofUS: Constant Attacks on Abortion End with EACH Woman Act

We are proud to stand alongside Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA), Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Congresswoman Diana DeGette (D-CO) and 73 other Congressional co-sponsors as they introduced the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH Woman) Act. The bill would dismantle the attacks on abortion access made by Hyde and ensure health coverage for abortion for every woman however much she earns or however she is insured. The EACH Woman Act would provide coverage for all pregnancy-related care, including abortion care regardless of a woman’s income, source of insurance, or where she lives thereby ensuring that that each of us, not just some of us, have the opportunity to make personal decisions for our families and for ourselves.AFY_4EACGofUS

As new abortion restrictions are enacted each year, the real-world impact falls hardest on low-income women, women of color and young women. Young women particularly face great barriers in accessing safe abortion care because of lack of coverage and lack of resources, as well as greater challenges with finding transportation, places to stay, and additional money to pay for incidental expenses. Ending bans on coverage and prohibiting political interference with the insurance we pay for will ensure young women can receive the coverage they need for all pregnancy-related care, including abortion care.

Advocates for Youth believes reproductive justice is inextricably linked with economic justice. We must stand up for young women and those living in poverty who are left struggling to access the abortion care they need because of stigma-induced bans on abortion coverage. Make no mistake, withholding coverage for abortion care, neither prevents abortions nor saves the U.S. dollars. And young people, who support the right to abortion access in their communities in large majorities, know this. The EACH Woman Act is leading the charge for affordable abortion access for every person who needs it.
