| Ten Ways to Support Adolescent Health & Rights |
|
by Emily Bridges, Director, Public Information Services Whether you're enjoying a holiday break or just looking forward to the new year, here are a few quick ways you can support adolescent health and rights now and throughout 2012! 1) Have a conversation about healthy relationships with your teen - including clear and honest communication around sexuality. Need help getting started? Check out the Parents' Sex Ed Center for guidance. 2) Sign the petition asking the Milton Hershey school not to discriminate against a student who has HIV. Let them know they shouldn't engage in bigotry against HIV positive young people. 3) Donate to Advocates - even the smallest amount supports programs and policies which help protect the health and rights of young people! 4) Tell President Obama and Secretary of Health and Human Services Sebelius not to block the FDA from doing its job: make Plan B One-Step available over the counter to all women who need it!
5) Follow Advocates on Twitter and "like" Advocates on Facebook for quick access to the most up-to-date news and research! 6) Urge your Representatives to support the Real Education for Healthy Youth Act - a comprehensive, progressive vision for sex education policy in the United States. 7) Learn about sex education and youth sexual health in your state and how you can become an advocate for adolescent reproductive and sexual health and rights. 8) Buy some condoms for your medicine cabinet, and let your teen know they're there. Having access to condoms makes a teen more likely to use them if they are sexually active. 9) Visit Advocates' shop and check out our selection of educational pamphlets, factsheets, and other educational materials 10) Remember the Three R's - Rights. Respect. Responsibility. Work toward the vision in 2012 and until it is realized! And from all of us at Advocates for Youth - have a wonderful holiday season and a youth-friendly New Year! |
