A new conversation about abortion. This is my story.

1 in 3 women will have an abortion in her lifetime, but we almost never talk about it. Not really. We may talk about abortion as an “issue,” but too often we remain silent about our own personal experiences.

We have all been frustrated by the unprecedented legislative and cultural attacks on abortion access, and we wanted to figure out a new way to organize, proactively and on our own terms. So, Advocates for Youth began working with Choice USA and Spiritual Youth for Reproductive Freedom to form a new campaign to destigmatize women’s experiences with abortion and protect access to this basic health care service.

It starts by sharing our stories.

Today, we are launching the 1 in 3 Campaign – and we are asking you to join us. The 1 in 3 Campaign is a grassroots movement to start a new conversation about abortion – telling our stories, on our own terms.

Will you take 3 minutes to listen to mine?

One in three of us has a story to tell, yet there is still so much stigma around abortion that many of us remain silent.

I didn’t ever expect to share my story so publicly. It wasn’t an easy decision to do so, but once I told my story a couple of times – and other people began to share their stories in return, I knew that we as women had a shared history that needed to be given voice. And, it was empowering to finally talk about it out loud.

The 1 in 3 Campaign is about telling our stories. Each is unique. Each deserves to be heard.

I hope many of you will join me by sharing your story as a part of
the 1 in 3 Campaign. If each of us talks with just three people, we can make sure that no one is left feeling isolated and alone. If you are comfortable, record your story and share it through the campaign. Whether you share your own story or a 1 in 3 Campaign video, we can all speak up. It’s time for us to come out in support of each other and in support of access to legal and safe abortion care in our communities.

Together, we can start a new dialogue.
