Today's the Day! Print

December 2 is the National Day of Action to stop abortion coverage restrictions in health care reform.  Thousands of people across the United States will join together by calling their Senators to fight to remove the Stupak Amendment from the bill. Get involved through phone-ins, Facebook, and Twitter!

Join the Call In Day!

It’s simple.  Dial 1-888-423-5983 and ask to speak with one of the Senators from your state.  When you get through to your representative’s office, simply tell them that you oppose including the Stupak Amendment in health care reform – or use the more detailed script after the jump.

Twitter Actions

Encourage Calls: Post one of these sample Twitter messages on December 2: “Today is the national day of action to #STOPSTUPAK. Call 888-423-5983 Tell your Senators not to restrict access to abortion.” “I just called 888-423-5983 & told my Senators not to restrict access to abortion coverage in health care reform. Have you? #STOPSTUPAK”

Let your Twitter followers know what your elected officials had to say during your meetings and how inspired you felt while standing with so many other reproductive justice activists. Hashtag Remember to use the hashtag #STOPSTUPAK in all of your Twitter posts about the December 2 day of action. Here’s an example: “Health care reform must expand access to legal services, NOT restrict access to them. #STOPSTUPAK.”

Messages to Senators Your voice is powerful and Congress is listening. Use Twitter to directly message Senators to keep Stupak language out of their bill. To find your Senator’s Twitter Name hop onto tweetcongress.org. Make sure to start your message with a period then your senator’s account name, like this: “@(Senator’s Account Name)” and end it with the #STOPSTUPAK hashtag. Remember to tweet both of your Senators! “.(@Senator) Stand up for the women you represent! Fight attempts to get anti-choice Amendments in your healthcare bill! #STOPSTUPAK”

Call-in Script:

Hi. My name is ________________. May I please speak with the Senator’s lead aide on health care reform?

(after they transfer you to the right person in the office)

Hi. My name is ___________ and I am calling from ___________. Senator Nelson recently announced that he will introduce a version of the Stupak Amendment in the Senate and I would like to ask that you oppose this amendment.  Abortion care is health care – and Congress should not  further restrict access to legal medical services in the name of “reform.”

Will Senator ____ work to keep language like Stupak’s out of the bill?

(Wait for response)

Thank you and please thank Senator ___ for standing up for the women and young people of America.
