Youth Activist Network
Mission
Advocates’ Youth Activist Network (YAN) consists of youth activists from across the country who fight for young people’s right to accurate sexual health information and youth-friendly sexual health services so that they can prevent unintended pregnancy and/or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. Network members advocate for science based, policies and practices in the US and abroad.
Strategies
Building Youth's Abilities and Opportunities as Advocates and Leaders
Advocates for Youth educates, empowers, and trains hundreds of youth each year to be effective sexual health advocates and leaders. Advocates for Youth:
- Maintains a network of young people who are interested in adolescent reproductive and sexual health and who can respond to policy threats and other related incidents in their local communities and nationally.
- Builds capacity among young organizers by providing training sessions, organizing materials and technical assistance.
- Provides youth with opportunities to participate in internet-based actions that focus on increasing young people’s rights to accurate sexual health information.
- Links young people from around the world who are interested in international issues related to sexual and reproductive health through a listserv that provides information on these issues and opportunities for action.
- Spearheads the Rights. Respect. Responsibility. Campaigns, initiatives led by youth activists advocating for comprehensive sex education, better access to emergency contraception and a more responsible US global AIDS and family planning policy.
- Houses two teams of youth organizers – the Youth Activist Network Campus Organizing Team and the Youth Activist Network High School Organizing team – who work in their local communities to improve sex education and who provide support and information to youth activists around the US.
