United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS

New York City (June 2001 and June 2006)

The Special Session on HIV/AIDS, held in June 2001 in New York City, drew attention to the intensifying HIV and AIDS crisis. Member states developed a Declaration of Commitment called Global Crisis, Global Action, and set specific targets as a call to action for all governments. The declaration addressed the extent of the HIV and AIDS epidemic, its social and economic implications around the global, and strategies for combating the disease.

Advocates for Youth’s staff and members of it’s International Youth Leadership Council (IYLC) participated to highlight the issue of youth and HIV/AIDS through the voices of young people themselves. The IYLC coordinated a youth demonstration outside the United Nations to protest the absence of young people on official country delegations. IYLC members also worked with young people from other nongovernmental organizations to formulate a Youth Position Paper, detailing the impact of HIV and AIDS on young people and articulating the need for youth involvement at all levels of decision-making when formulating plans to address the devastation of AIDS.

For the 2006 High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, a five year review meeting of the original Special Session, Advocates for Youth staff and International Youth Leadership Council members will again join young people from around the world to inform, educate, and influence governments with regard to funding, programmes and policies for youth and HIV/AIDS.

As part of this work, Advocates for Youth and Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA), in collaboration with UNFPA, are coordinating a Youth Summit at the 2006 High Level Meeting to highlight the issue of youth and HIV/AIDS through the voices of young people themselves. The Youth Summit will serve as a two-day preparatory meeting and training. The training will focus on education and skills-building to ensure that young people can effectively participate at the 2006 High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS. In addition, throughout the three day review sessions, Advocates and GYCA will convene Youth Caucus check-in meetings, where participants will report back on their activities, evaluate the success of their advocacy strategies, and develop concrete action steps on how to apply the information and advocacy efforts of the week in their home country upon returning.
