Public Information Services

Mission

The Public Information Services department works to provide staff, initiative partners, and the public with the best and most current information about adolescent reproductive and sexual health and related topics.

Web sites

Advocates believes that with the increase of technology, the internet has become an important way for people to receive information. The main Advocates for Youth Web site is a comprehensive portal of information on adolescent reproductive and sexual health issues. The Web site includes Advocates’ latest publications, campaigns, policy initiatives, and information about issues relevant to ensuring young people have access to honest sexual health information and confidential sexual health services.

In 1997, Advocates began harnessing the power of the Internet to reach youth in high-risk situations—including youth of color and gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) youth with culturally relevant information, support, and community-based referral. Currently, Advocates for Youth hosts 3 audience-specific Web sites:

  • Ambientejoven.org – for Spanish speaking lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people.
  • MySistahs.org – by and for young women of color
  • YouthResource – by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people

Advocates also hosts 2 project-specific Web sites:

The Library

Advocates’ library is one of the few sexual health collections in the world that is accessible to the general public, including young people. Each year, the Library responds to more than 1,200 research and information requests from youth-serving organizations, policy makers, youth activists, and the media in the United States and developing countries. Library services include a full time librarian, well-versed in the scientific and medical literature, to provide assistance with research and locating the best information. In addition to assisting with or providing research, the librarian actively participates in producing new publications. Search the library using the InMagic online database.

Publications

Through publications the Public Information Services Department provides hard copies or downloadable files of Advocates’ science-based, rigorously researched fact sheets, curricula, policy briefs, brochures, and other materials. Advocates for Youth's publications include information on involving communities to improve programs and policies for youth, uncovering the facts about adolescent sexual health, involving youth in peer education and activism, and educating young people about reproductive and sexual health. Go to the publications section to see a list of all of Advocates for Youth’s publications.
