Rights. Respect. Responsibility.® Campaign

Campaign Vision

All young people will have the knowledge, skills, services and support they need to become sexually healthy adults.

Campaign Beliefs

  • Youth have rights to accurate and complete sexual health information, confidential reproductive and sexual health services, and a secure stake in the future.
  • Youth deserve respect. Today, young people are largely perceived as part of the problem. Valuing young people means they are part of the solution and are included in developing programs and policies that affect their well-being.
  • Society has the responsibility to provide young people with the tools they need to safeguard their sexual health, and young people have the responsibility to protect themselves from too-early childbearing and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.

Advocates for Youth bases its Rights. Respect. Responsibility.® (3Rs) Campaign on lessons learned from study tours to Western Europe. Countries such as France, Germany, and the Netherlands embrace these beliefs and, as a result, their teen pregnancy and STI/HIV rates are significantly lower than rates in the United States.

Campaign Strategies

  • International Study Tours—Advocates for Youth offers youth-serving professionals, foundation officers, and state and national leaders opportunities to explore adolescent sexual health policies in other countries in order to improve U.S. policies, systems, and practices.
  • State & Community Action Teams—Advocates for Youth partners with state-based organizations to develop and implement 3Rs campaigns in communities and states. Advocates provides technical assistance and resources to state coalitions and task forces.
  • National Organizations as Partners—Advocates for Youth works with national youth and sexual health organizations, helping them to integrate the 3Rs into their organizational structure and providing them with materials, training, and strategic assistance.
  • Family and Community Involvement—Advocates for Youth provides parents with information and resources on parent-child communication about sexual health, hosts the Parents Sex Ed. Center and, each year, coordinates Let's Talk Month—a national initiative to promote parent-child communication.
  • Special 3Rs Initiatives for Faith Communities and Health Care Providers—Advocates for Youth has developed initiatives to support the 3Rs among faith communities and health professionals.
  • Entertainment Industry StorylinesThe Media Project works with the entertainment industry, encouraging depictions that model and normalize responsible sexual behavior in television programming.
