What is Y-FAB?

Y-FAB is a group of young people who are passionate about sexual and reproductive health issues and committed to creating a sense of giving among their peers. The group fosters and sustains youth support for Advocates’ sexual and reproductive health programming, serves as a sounding board for the organization’s youth-focused fundraising initiatives, and helps implement such initiatives. Y-FAB also serves as an advisory body to Advocates’ Board of Directors Fundraising Committee.

Who Should Apply?

We are looking for individuals under the age of 30 who are:

  • Committed to sexual and reproductive health issues such as teen pregnancy and HIV/STI prevention; contraceptive access; sex education; abortion rights; international family planning; and/or gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) concerns.
  • Interested in learning more about fundraising in the nonprofit arena and willing to apply the skills acquired to help raise funds for Advocates for Youth.

NOTE: Applicants must reside in the United States or Canada.

What Are the Benefits?

In addition to special recognition, Y-FAB members will receive:
  • Exclusive skills-building training on topics such as Fundraising 101, Planning and Executing Successful Fundraising Events, Social Media and Fundraising, How to Find and Cultivate Donors, Effective Messaging, etc.
  • Ongoing resources to help with fundraising efforts, including articles, fact sheets, a community fundraising toolkit, and staff assistance, as needed.
  • Networking opportunities with other youth leaders (via a listserv and periodic conference calls).
  • Access to community leaders who can provide practical advice or solutions to leadership challenges such as Advocates’ Board of Directors, senior staff, and other professionals in the nonprofit field.

What are the Requirements?

No prior fundraising experience is required. Communication will take place via webinar, e-mail, listserv, and conference calls, so there is no travel involved. Y-FAB members must be willing to commit to a one-year term, during which they must attend at least one fundraising training, participate in at least two conference calls, and make every effort to reach their personal fundraising goal. Fundraising goals will be determined in consultation with Advocates’ Manager of Individual Giving at the beginning of the term. Terms may be renewed.

Why Advocates for Youth?

Advocates for Youth was established in 1980 to help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. As a cornerstone of this work, Advocates is committed to educating, empowering, and mobilizing young people to be partners and leaders in the sexual and reproductive health field. The organization “walks the walk” when it comes to youth-adult partnerships, with young people under the age of 28 running six of Advocates’ programs/departments and comprising almost one-third of the Board of Directors. Advocates created Y-FAB because it believes that youth should be involved in every facet of the organization, including fundraising, which is a valuable asset in the nonprofit world.
