TRANSITIONS

Advocates' quarterly newsletter for professionals and advocates updates readers on a variety of health and sexuality issues facing adolescents—legislative issues, evaluated programs, services, and new initiatives. Each edition summarizes current research on adolescent reproductive and sexual health.

  • The January 2004 issue of Transitions compiles information about issues faced by youth of color, including HIV-positive youth and gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) youth of color. It considers how concepts of masculinity contribute to young men's sexual risk behaviors and their problems in intimate relationships. It discusses the interplay of cultural competence and social justice and how to create culturally relevant programs. It discusses barriers to health care and arts programs that promote young people's sexual health. Stories by youth of color underscore the importance of the Rights. Respect. Responsibility.® paradigm, and a lesson plan provides opportunities for young people to improve communication skills related to sexual risk reduction. Finally, this issue provides links to national and online resources. [html] [pdf]
  • The March 2003 issue of Transitions is a compilation of fact sheets from Advocates for Youth. The information ranges from the most up-to-date data about teen pregnancy rates and HIV infections to the impact of abstinence and contraception on teen sexual health. [html] [pdf]
  • The September 2002 issue of Transitions encourages parents to talk with their children and teens about sexuality and sexual health issues. The issue includes a full-color poster and a guide to resources for parents. To read this special issue of Transitions, visit Advocates for Youth's Parents' Sex Ed Center at www.advocatesforyouth.org/parents/. The information from this Transitions is also available in [pdf] format.
  • The June 2002 issue of Transitions [html] [pdf] offers factual information about the lives of and risks to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLTBQ) youth, as well as personal observations of young activists in the field. It provides criteria for successfully serving GLBTQ youth, GLBTQ youth of color, HIV-positive youth, transgender youth, and young people who question their sexual orientation.
  • The April 2002 issue of Transitions [html] [pdf] focuses on community participation, a movement in the public health field that respects the rights and responsibility of community members—including youth—to diagnose the causes of a community problem and to actively engage in designing, implementing, and evaluating strategies to address the problem.
  • The December 2001 issue of Transitions is Advocates' Rights. Respect. Responsibility.® (3Rs) Campaign Kit. The kit is dedicated to encouraging you—the youth-serving professional, health care provider, educator, parent, policymaker, and youth activist—to join with us in our efforts to change the way society deals with adolescent reproductive and sexual health. To read this issue, visit the 3Rs Campaign Web site. [To order copies of this special issue, click here.]
  • The October 2001 issue of Transitions [html] [pdf] provides an in-depth look at how to build effective youth-adult partnerships, discussing barriers and tips to building such partnerships. Activist youth share stories about how they advocate for change within their communities—working to promote honest, open communication about sexuality and to safeguard young people's access to confidential health services.
  • The March 2001 issue of Transitions [html] [pdf] looks at the controversy over abstinence-only-until-marriage education. Articles provide specifics about the legislative mandate for this education, contrast comprehensive and abstinence-only sexuality education, and discuss the conclusions of medical and scientific groups regarding the censorship of sex ed.
