Internships 


International Policy Manager

Under the supervision of the Director of Public Policy, the International Policy Manager promotes international policies that will improve adolescent access to comprehensive reproductive and sexual health information and services. The Manager acts as the organization’s voice on these issues on Capitol Hill and with the United Nations, foreign governments, and colleague organizations. The Manager develops policy briefs and education materials for policy makers, the media, and youth activists. The Manager also plans and conducts regular trainings for youth activists on international policy advocacy and assists the policy department in advocacy day activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work with the Director of Public Policy to develop the organization’s international policy agenda, including, but not limited to, issues around global AIDS, international family planning, and human rights..

Work with the Director of Public Policy to implement an international policy strategic agenda, including developing objectives, time lines, activities and budgets.

Serve as Advocates’ representative on Capitol Hill and with all Senate and House committees on international policy issues that impact young people.

Monitor and manage relationships with agencies that administer U.S. foreign policy, including, but not limited to, the State Department, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC).

Monitor and manage relationships with United Nations agencies, foreign governments, embassies, and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Develop policy critiques, grassroots action alerts, talking points, and other materials as needed.

Serve as organizational representative to the Global AIDS Roundtable and International Family Planning Coalition and with other like-minded coalitions.

Develop proposals and prepare grant reports related to department funding needs.

Liaise with the International Programs Division to provide policy guidance and training to the International Youth Leadership Council and International Youth Speak Out Project.

In partnership with the International Youth Leadership Council, manage organizational presence and advocacy agenda at international conferences and meetings, such as International AIDS Conferences and relevant United Nations events.


Additional Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors Degree with three to five years of programmatic or specialized experience in international legislative or U.S. foreign policy advocacy, or a Master’s Degree with one to three years of programmatic or specialized experience in international or U.S. foreign policy advocacy. Experience with international family planning or global AIDS policy would be helpful. Knowledge of the federal legislative process a must.

A demonstrated experience in policy analysis, organizational planning, communications, and program implementation. A demonstrated interest in the policy issues surrounding adolescent sexual and reproductive health at the international level.

Ability to develop “big picture” strategy while keeping track of details and to think outside the box. Ability to digest large amounts of information quickly and turn it into concise, user-friendly materials for the Hill, media, and colleague organizations.

Must be a self-starter, able to prioritize and meet deadlines as delineated by the Director of Public Policy. Excellent writing and interpersonal skills required. Experience conducting advocacy training and running advocacy events desired. A demonstrated capacity to work with a diverse group preferred.

A commitment to Advocates for Youth’s mission and goals required.

Some international travel required.

Manager of New Media Strategies 

 

ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION:

Advocates for Youth is dedicated to creating programs and promoting policies that help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health. Since 1980, Advocates has been providing information, training, and advocacy to youth, youth-serving organizations, policy makers, and the media in the United States and internationally. Advocates’ philosophy of Rights.Respect.Responsibility.® informs all its work. The organization promotes youth rights to sexual health information and services, models youth-adult partnerships in all its efforts, and holds society responsible for its role in providing youth with the tools they need to make responsible decisions about their sexual health.

BRIEF PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Initiative for Cultural Advocacy and Mobilization is a three-year project designed to mobilize a strong and vocal youth constituency in support of honest sex education and other sexual health services at the national and state levels. The project is composed of three interrelated objectives: 1) to use new media strategies and youth activism to propel sex education and other sexual health needs of young people onto the progressive political agenda (cultural advocacy); 2) to assist state coalitions to advocate for the elimination of abstinence-only funding and to promote comprehensive sex education policy; and 3) to build a strong and vocal youth activist constituency that will safeguard sex education and other adolescent sexual health services in five target states and at the federal level.

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Manager of New Media Strategies will be responsible for the strategic vision, implementation, and evaluation of new media strategies. Under the supervision of the Associate Director of e-Campaign Strategies, the successful candidate will use the online organizing tools, social media and video to:

• Expand and empower a youth activist movement in support of the sexual health rights of young people.
• Make adolescent reproductive and sexual health issues – as well as the millennial youth movement itself – an increasingly visible and powerful part of the progressive agenda
• Grow membership of and participation in Advocates’ Youth Activist Network through social media
• Increase the impact of Advocates’ advocacy efforts by supervising the creation
• Build the reputation of Advocates for Youth and Amplify within the progressive blogosphere and millennial youth movement

The Manager of New Media Strategies will be the key representative of Advocates for Youth with the online progressive community, working to develop a network of contacts and distribution outlets for online content in the progressive blogosphere and within the millennial youth movement.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Creates a comprehensive new media strategy to mobilize Advocates’ Youth Activist Network in the United States and around the world

Increases the impact of Advocates’ advocacy efforts by supervising the new media components of all advocacy campaigns and widely promoting these campaigns online

Implements and supervises ongoing video strategy to drive campaigns and raise awareness of Advocates’ issues and policy goals

Responsible for writing, shooting, editing, and marketing video and video content, as well as collaborating with youth activists on various projects

Writes provocative blogs for Amplify on sexual health, pop culture, and political issues and makes sure these are widely read, crossposted, and linked to

Manages all aspects and day-to-day operations of a social media plan – including crossposting of Amplify content – to tie together Advocates’ use of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and other new media

Develops a network of key contacts in the progressive blogosphere to build strategic partnerships and obtain placement of Advocates’ online content

Monitors the blogosphere and relevant social media, including Advocates’ opposition, for breaking news, relevant current events, emerging trends and other opportunities – and distributes tips to staff and Frontpage Bloggers accordingly

Manages Advocates’ video content in all online venues (Amplify, YouTube, etc.) to ensure consistent branding, develop user-friendly interfaces, and route viewers to appropriate landing pages

Works closely with Director of Public Information Services and Frontpage Bloggers to develop an ongoing crossposting strategy to build readership for Amplify and individual youth writers

Trains youth activists in new media and blogging and works to develop their skills over time

Manages community building aspects of Amplify including: directing traffic to specific campaigns or areas of the site; developing opportunities for partnership and collaboration with other blogs or organizations; and emailing invitations to the site and developing relationships with site users.

Seeking out, scheduling and posting blogs from guest writers and Advocates’ staff for Amplify and Advocates’ main website

Coordinates with State Strategies Managers to build the social and new media capacity for five CAMI state projects

Communicates and collaborates directly with youth activists to ensure that social media and video strategies are authentic, youth-driven and effective

Implements new media components of any rapid-response operations

Oversees the creation of ongoing content for www.amplifyyourvoice.org and www.advocatesforyouth.org to develop regular repeat readership

Explores new technologies and social media opportunities as they emerge to maintain Advocates’ reputation as a leading new media innovator in the nonprofit and social justice sectors

Works with members of the New Media and Information Services team to track site growth, content reach, and activist activity – and to meet all necessary deliverables related to funding for the project and organization

Additional Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in communications, political science or related field. Experience in video production preferred. At least three years experience in online community building, blogging, and grassroots organizing. Demonstrated commitment to youth activism and social justice issues. Ability to coordinate and track multiple, and often simultaneous, national and state-wide online campaigns. Excellent writing skills a must.

Internships (General)


Advocates for Youth values the opportunity for interns to be a part of its work. The goal of Advocates' internship program is to provide young people with successful and meaningful opportunities to learn about Advocates' mission and programs, contribute to the work of the organization during a limited time period, and gain meaningful professional experience.

Advocates offers a limited number of paid internships. Compensation will be based on the District of Columbia's minimum wage for each hour worked. Unpaid internships are also available to students who receive credit for their work or for those who do not need compensation. In either event, unpaid interns will receive a small monthly stipend to offset expenses related to their working at Advocates.

Development Department Internship


Advocates for Youth seeks an intern to work 20 hours per week in its development department. As the development intern, the individual will provide support to the Director of Development, with a primary focus on foundation prospect research and assisting with writing initial letters of inquiry. Assistance with general office administration will be also required, including organizing files, processing thank you letters, and packaging and sending grant reports and proposals. The individual should enjoy and have strong skills in Internet research and writing, be highly detail oriented, and have the ability to work on multiple projects independently.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to learn more about fundraising and has a general interest in adolescent reproductive and sexual health issues. Advocates is highly committed to youth development, and therefore provides its interns with a flexible and supportive work environment in which each intern can find ways to pursue his or her own interests while here.

Duties:

  • Prospect research, with a primary focus on foundations. Includes helping to research, summarize, and organize current foundation prospect guidelines.
  • Assistance with grant writing.
  • Administrative duties—including organizing files, processing thank you letters, etc.—as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Desire to learn more about fundraising and grant writing, in addition to some interest in adolescent reproductive and sexual health issues.
  • High level of attention to detail, solid organizational skills.
  • Good to excellent writing skills.
  • Some familiarity with Internet research.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Sense of humor.
